IELTS Overview





IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is designed to reflect how you will use English in your new life abroad, and, in less than three hours, it will assess all of your English skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Speaking

In the Speaking test, you will have a discussion with a certified examiner. It will be interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get. The Speaking test is 11-14 minutes long and is in three parts.

Part 1

You will answer questions about yourself and your family.

Part 2

You will speak about a topic. (Including specific sub-topics, 1 minute to prepare and 1 minute to present)

Part 3

You will have a longer discussion about the topic introduced in Part 2.

Main Examination: 




Part 1 – Listening

Duration: 30 minutes long & 10 minutes transfer time (40 minutes)
Played : only once
Questions: 40 (10 questions per section)
Sections: 4 (same for academic and general, it starts off from easy to hard)
  1.  Section 1 – 2 speakers (conversation, transaction)
  2.  Section2 – 1 speaker (general topic)
  3.  Section 3 – {2-4} speakers ( conversation in academic situation)
  4.  Section 4 – 1 speaker (academic lecture)





Part 2 – Reading

Duration: 1 hour, no extra transfer time
Questions: 40
Sections: 3 passages from easy to hard, so do not spend a lot of time in each one

Part 2 – Writing

Part 1

The Writing Task 1 of the IELTS Academic test requires you to write a summary of at least 150 words in response to a particular graph (bar, line or pie graph), table, chart, or process (how something works, how something is done).
Duration: 20 minutes

Part 2

The Writing Task 2 of the IELTS test requires you to write at least 250 words. You will be presented with a topic and will be tested on your ability to respond by giving and justifying an opinion, discussing the topic, summarizing details, outlining problems, identifying possible solutions and supporting what you write with reasons, arguments and relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Duration: 40 minutes
