Although,
even though vs. despite
Τα Although και even
though έχουν παρόμοια σημασία με τα despite και in spite of. Τα χρησιμοποιούμαι για να δηλώσουμε
έκπληξη, παραδοξότητα και κάτι το απρόσμενο. Παρ’ ότι λοιπόν, εννοιολογικά
είναι κοντά, υπάρχει διαφορά στην χρήση τους.
Τα Although και even
though είναι σύνδεσμοι / conjunctions. Στα προφορικά,
αντί του although μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιούμε
τα even though και though. Τα χρησιμοποιούμε ως εξής:
- although + a clause
- even though + a clause / πρόταση
- though + a clause / πρόταση
Τα Despite και in spite of είναι προθέσεις / prepositions, που έχουν παρόμοια σημασία. Χρησιμοποιούνται ως εξής:
- despite + noun, or
- despite + verb + -ing
- in spite of + a noun, or
- in spite of + verb + -ing

Προσοχή!
Πολλοί μαθητές μπερδεύονται με την χρήση των εναντιωματικών συνδέσμων και του χρονικού while / ενώ. Είναι χρονικός σύνδεσμος και όχι εναντιωματικός.
Το ‘Όταν / When χρησιμοποιείται όταν δύο πράγματα συμβαίνουν ταυτόχρονα, χωρίς να μας απασχολεί η διάρκεια της πράξης. Αντιθέτως με την χρήση του Ενώ / while μας ενδιαφέρει η διάρκεια, ενώ σχηματίζεται ως εξής: while + subject + verb.
"The phone rang while I was watching TV."
"I met him while we were studying in the library."
